We all know about the huge push to get Rage Against The Machine's Killing in the Name to the Christmas No. 1 spot in order to end years of X Factor domination. It's a lovely idea, but will it work? Early indications show that Rage is outselling Joe McElderry's The Climb on all digital download sites that I've been able to find.
Avid Rage fans (or zealous X Factor haters) have even gone to the lengths of doctoring X Factor clips to publicise what has actually become a huge campaign. Voila!
(Watch it all the way through, it gets better!)
My prediction is, however, that the hype will be short-lived. Today, The Climb was released on CD single, which means that all the grannies, the Christmas shoppers and the twelve-year-olds who don't have iTunes accounts will go out and buy it.
I haven't bought Killing in the Name, but only because I already own it. I have a cunning plan for my gig on Saturday night, which is to play the first few bars of The Climb, await the horrendous booing from the drunken punters, and then slam on some Rage so that they all go mental! Should be fun, as long as I'm not lynched...

I kind of hope that Joe doesn't become the first X Factor winner in five years not to have a Christmas No. 1, but mainly because I love an underdog, and a viral Facebook Group has, surprisingly, made him just that.

If Joe McElderry wins, it will really beg the question, who the fuck is buying physical singles?
ReplyDeleteThat's popular culture! And, to be fair, most of the people buying Rage would never have heard of it before seeing that Facebook group, and are unlikely to ever listen to it again after next Sunday afternoon. The only reason they have heard it now is because of hype surrounding the X Factor.
ReplyDeleteGotta hand it to Cowell... he's fucking good!
when you do the first few bars of ian, can you do a zewhahahahahhahaha on the cd deck please (i sort of a stratch but i want to say spin back, i donthin i can though.) and THEN do RATM. thanks.
ReplyDeleteyeah, if you put the CD Player into Vinyl mode and press the cue button it will spin back in a slow, maniacal laughing kind of way. I know exactly what you mean! Great call, I was going to go for a straightforward drop mix but I think you have an idea there, Hitch!
ReplyDeleteAs a side note, we both know there is no contestant called Ian.
